It was 30th August night. A few hours to 12 a.m. - 31st August , our nation's 49th birthday. 49 years of independence, 49 years of freedom. A start of a new voyage , a new glorious page in history.
Kuching is once again given the honour to be the host for this year's National Day celebration. After its previous hosting in 1993 when i was still 7 years old , 13 years had elapsed before we see such a grand occasion being held here again.
Of course i won't want to miss such a great opportunity to witness and experience this once-in-a-lifetime kind of event. Furthermore this will be my last time wishing my home country "Happy Birthday" before i depart to Czech for 6 years of study. And the next time it will be held in Kuching will be in 2019 , which means i will be 33. Whoa!
It was just 8 pm when i emerged from Star Cineplex after watching the bone-chilling "Snake on the Plane". The street was packed with throngs of people. People , people and more people. At every corner , every turn and every available space on the streets , there were people. Traffic was congested , roads were blocked and more and more people were flocking the streets as time passed by.
Kuching city was given a facelift from top to bottom. Spotlights were up , stage was erected and screens were set. People of all walks of life converged at such a meaningful event despite differences in social background , colour and creed.
Everyone was in such jovial and merry mood. A celebration of the nation. Picture of Malaysia was once again painted with a myriad of colours and an assortment of cultures. Singers on the stage was belting out songs of different languages yet everyone seemed to enjoy it.
Every balloon has a different colour yet it is still a balloon. Just like us. Despite being different and unique in our own way , all of us are still Malaysians. "Bangsa Malaysia"..
"Merahmu bara semangat waja.
putihmu bersih budi pekerti ,
kuning berdaulat payung negara ,
biru perpaduan kami semua..."
Our "Jalur Gemilang" , national flag.
When the clock struck 12 , the mood was once again brought to boil to its peak. A magnificent fireworks display that splashed the inkling dark sky with colours. People were in a state of euphoria. "Merdeka" reverberated around the area followed by our national anthem and patriotic songs. The country top leaders were here to celebrate the nation's birthday with us. Malaysia Happy 49th birthday!!
